Dr. Lichtenstein is one of two NIH fellows who will be trained by the National Institutes of Health for Hospice and Palliative Medicine for board eligibility in hospice and palliative care. The program will train two NIH fellows per year at the CESLC campus. Dr. Rachel Ombres will follow Dr. Lichtenstein and will start her rotation on our campus in mid-February, 2017.
The fellows will shadow CESLC’s practitioners, to develop a deep, practical understanding of the medical, psychological and even spiritual aspects of team-based, holistic approaches to palliative medicine and hospice care.
Palliative care works alongside a patient’s regular treatment to improve their quality of life. It focuses on both physical and emotional needs to make a patient as comfortable as possible, as well as to provide support to the patient’s family.
