Who would have thought, twelve months ago, that we would be here? 2020 has definitely been an unprecedented year that has had its challenges. At Charles E. Smith Life Communities, we’ve taken this opportunity to revisit our safety and health protocols so that we’re doing everything we can to keep our community healthy, safe and engaged.

We’ve learned that, more than anything, staying socially connected to friends and family is incredibly important to our health and well-being. While we strive to follow the stringent guidelines set out by the CDC and our state, we temper that with inspiring leisure programs and opportunities to spend time with the people that matter to us.

As we open our doors once again to welcome new residents into our community, I’m proud to say that we are doing everything in our power to restore confidence and peace of mind. Our innovative L.I.F.E. Solutions – an exclusive program by Charles E. Smith Life Communities – has been designed to keep our residents safe, healthy and engaged from the moment they enter their new home.

Protocols and Plans to Protect Our Residents

L.I.F.E. Solutions has been designed to ensure safety and health for everyone in our community.

L stands for lifestyle transition, which starts on the very first day – move-in day. Our residents receive a welcome gift of a mask, hand sanitizer and touch tool. Prior to the move, we provide an advanced deep clean of the apartment. We also require our new resident to have a negative COVID-19 test as well as a mandatory 14-day quarantine. During this 14-day transition, residents will receive personalized activity packs, room service and Touchtown, our in-house closed-circuit TV community engagement platform.

I stands for infection control. Our community is adhering to rigorous sanitation protocols and continually monitoring anyone who comes into our community. We use EPA- and CDC-approved disinfectants and monitor anyone who enters our community. Health screening and temperature checks are completed at all entrances, and sanitization states are placed throughout our entire campus.

F stands for fresh and clean. We’re sanitizing every inch of our community, frequently disinfecting high-touch areas and dedicating specific team members to health and sanitization. Our team members are completely dedicated to these measures. All our residences and service buildings are also being supplied with fresh air, and never recycled.

E stands for engagement every day. This is made up of two important parts: maintaining an exceptional dining experience and engaging social participation, both while socially distancing.

Dining is an important part of our community life, but in order to maintain health and safety, we now provide room service to our residents at every meal. Our safety-trained dining team members wear masks and gloves and sanitize hands between deliveries. We use disposable and online menus and disposable utensils and plates to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19.

At the same time, we still hold weekly special dining events delivered right to our residents’ apartment doors, such as happy hours, popcorn and movie nights, ice cream socials, parades, birthday and holiday celebrations and other special events.

Staying social is incredibly important to all of us, which is why we make an effort to ensure the communal touch in everything we do. We provide small group leisure programs every day for our residents. Our in-house TV programming offers a wide variety of entertainment, including religious services, cooking shows, daily Noon News with our executive directors, virtual tours of sites including museums, live music programs, educational lectures, movies, exercise classes and more.

Finally, we know there is no substitute for spending time with family members. We offer virtual visits as well as outdoor space for visits and indoor visitation booths. This allows us to provide residents that personal touch while remaining safe and socially distanced.

All these safety measures do not in any way detract from the amazing lifestyle provided by Charles E. Smith Life Communities. In fact, they simply enhance it. I am proud to be a member of this community and am thrilled to be able to give my all to helping our residents live the very best life possible. If you or a loved one have been considering moving to our community but the recent pandemic has given you pause, I encourage you to take a look around and see how wonderful life can be here. This is the perfect time to move into our community – not only will you have peace of mind when it comes to safety and security, but you’ll instantly be able to form social bonds and community connections. It truly is the best of both worlds – safety and socialization!
