The Torah Project
A Sacred Scroll for Every Soul
The current Torah scrolls at Charles E. Smith Life Communities are large and heavy. Clergy often require assistance handling them during services, and their weight limits opportunities for resident participation. The time has come to commission a lighter Sefer Torah—one that ensures all who wish to lift, read and connect with the Torah can do so with ease and dignity.
Below is a list of opportunities for individuals and families to sponsor letters, words and special passages—including entire books and sacred ritual items associated with the Torah.
Throughout the year of the Torah’s creation, there will be educational events and chances to inscribe a letter alongside the scribe. Once the scroll is complete, the entire community will be invited to celebrate its completion, marking the beginning of a new chapter in our spiritual life.
All contributions to this special campaign will support the creation of the new Torah, the acquisition of essential ritual items such as the Ark and pointer (yad) and the enrichment of vibrant Jewish religious life across campus. The scroll will be housed at Ring House.
