A Sacred Journey: Rabbi Herzfeld on Writing Our New Torah
Join us for a special program as Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld shares the inspiration, meaning and process behind our community’s new Torah.
In this opening lecture, Rabbi Herzfeld will walk us through the sacred journey of writing a Sefer Torah—from the spiritual significance to the practical steps involved. Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld is a respected Modern Orthodox rabbi, educator and Torah scribe. He previously served as senior rabbi of Ohev Sholom—The National Synagogue in Washington, D.C., and now leads Yeshivas Elimelech, an inclusive yeshiva he founded to make Torah study more accessible to all. A published author and host of the popular “5 Minute Daf Yomi” podcast, Rabbi Herzfeld brings deep scholarship and joyful engagement to his work.
His connection to Charles E. Smith Life Communities is especially meaningful—his parents are proud residents of Ring House, and he is honored to write this Torah for a community that has become part of his family’s life. This will be the twelfth Torah he has written, a sacred milestone made even more special by his personal connection to our community.
